Driving in São Tomé

Road Conditions and Practical Tips

Driving in São Tomé can be quite challenging, especially outside the main towns. Some road sections are excellent, while others have potholes, rough surfaces, or dirt and stone sections. Therefore, you should plan your route carefully and allow extra time for longer journeys.

The road conditions can also change quickly after heavy rain. In particular, secondary and remote roads may become difficult to drive. For this reason, always check local conditions before heading to a remote area. Official travel guidance also recommends avoiding road travel outside cities at night because of poor lighting, pedestrians, livestock, and damaged secondary roads.

Important: Avoid Driving During Heavy Rain and Storms

Do not drive during heavy rain or storms if you can avoid it.

In the north, some roads run close to steep cliffs. During heavy rain, falling rocks or trees can create additional hazards.

In forested areas, falling trees are frequent, especially during or after strong weather. Do not take any risks. If conditions become unsafe, stop and wait until the weather improves.

Keep a Local SIM Card

Always have a local SIM card with you when driving in São Tomé.

Do not rely only on Wi-Fi connections. You may need to contact technical assistance, your rental company, or a local contact while you are on the road.

This becomes particularly important when travelling to remote areas where there are no restaurants or hotel nearby.

Avoid Driving at Night

We strongly recommend avoiding driving at night, especially outside São Tomé city.

There is little traffic on many roads, but this does not necessarily make night driving easier. In villages, the main road can become a pedestrian area with people walking and dogs sleeping in the middle of the road.

You may also encounter trucks with only one working light. Some motorcycles may have no visible red rear light.

Because road lighting is limited and some roads have potholes or no clear markings, hazards can be difficult to see at night.

Plan Your Driving Carefully

The best way to enjoy a self-drive trip in São Tomé is to plan your routes around daylight hours.

Avoid creating an itinerary that requires a long drive late in the afternoon. Instead, leave enough time to reach your destination before sunset.

Finally, remember that driving in São Tomé is part of the adventure. The main roads can be comfortable, while remote roads require patience, careful driving, and good preparation.

The different roads in São Tomé

Driving in Northern São Tomé

From São Tomé to Guadalupe, the road is in excellent condition following recent road improvements. After Guadalupe, however, the older asphalt road becomes more demanding, with many potholes.

From Neves to Santa Catarina, conditions vary considerably. Some sections remain relatively easy, while others can more challenging.

Driving in Central São Tomé

The asphalt road continues towards Roça Saudade and is generally suitable for normal driving.

However, the final section towards the Botanical Garden becomes a dirt road. The road climbs as it approaches the garden, so drive slowly.

Driving Along the East Coast

The asphalt road continues south along the east coast towards São João dos Angolares. Although most of this route is accessible, you should still expect some potholes.

After São João dos Angolares, the road becomes more challenging when you reach Ribeira Palma. From there, several sections return to dirt roads, and some can be in poor condition.

Therefore, drive slowly and follow the track of other vehicles.

Driving Beyond Porto Alegre

The road beyond Porto Alegre requires more preparation.

To continue inland, you will encounter two steep dirt and rocky routes. The better option can change depending on recent weather and local activity. Rain and tractors working on the roads can significantly affect driveability.

If you are unsure which route to take, ask local residents about the current road conditions before continuing.

Porto Alegre to Praia Inhame and Piscina Beach

The road from Porto Alegre to Praia Inhame and Piscina Beach is mainly a dirt and stone road.

The route is accessible, but conditions can vary after rain. Drive slowly, especially on uneven sections, and allow more time than you would for a normal road.

Driving to Remote Hiking and Forest Locations

Some hiking departure points and remote forest locations can only be reached by road within plantations.

These roads can change significantly depending on recent rainfall and tractor activity. A road that was easy to use a few days earlier may become much more difficult after heavy rain.

Therefore,  drive particularly carefully on these routes.
