Distances and Driving Times in São Tomé

General Considerations

São Tomé is a relatively small island, with three main national roads connecting the capital with the different parts of the country:

  • Road 1 → North
  • Road 2 → Center
  • Road 3 → East and South

Although distances may look short on a map, driving times can be longer than expected. Several factors affect the journey, including road conditions, traffic, villages along the route, and the need to reduce speed in built-up areas.

Some roads are also curvy, especially in mountainous and forested areas. In these sections, it is better to drive slowly and allow extra time.

From São Tomé City to the North

São Tomé → Guadalupe
→ 20 minutes

São Tomé → Morro Peixe
→ 30 minutes

São Tomé → Neves
→ 1 hour

São Tomé → Santa Catarina
→ 1 hour 30 minutes

The northern route combines good sections of asphalt road with areas where road conditions can vary. Allow additional time when continuing beyond Guadalupe.

From São Tomé City to the Center

São Tomé → Trindade
→ 20 minutes

São Tomé → Monte Café
→ 30 minutes

São Tomé → Botanical Garden
→ 45 minutes

The central route climbs towards the mountains and forest. Curves and changing road conditions mean that the actual driving time can vary.

From São Tomé City to the East

São Tomé → Santana
→ 20 minutes

São Tomé → São João dos Angolares
→ 1 hour

The east coast route follows the national road along the coast. Allow extra time in villages and on sections where the asphalt road has potholes.

From São Tomé City to the South

São Tomé → Porto Alegre
→ 2 hours to 2 hours 15 minutes

The journey to Porto Alegre is considerably longer than the distances around the capital. Road conditions, villages and slower sections can all affect the total travel time.

Porto Alegre → Jalé Beach

Porto Alegre → Jalé Beach
→ 20 minutes

The final section to Jalé Beach includes a slower road section, so allow some extra time rather than relying only on the distance shown on a map.

Plan Your Journey by Driving Time, Not Distance

When planning a self-drive trip in São Tomé, do not calculate your journey based only on kilometres.

A route that looks short on a map can take significantly longer because of:

  • Road conditions
  • Traffic and local activity
  • Villages and built-up areas
  • Curvy mountain roads
  • Potholes and slower sections
  • Rain and changing weather conditions

For longer journeys, it is better to leave early and keep some extra time in your schedule. This is particularly important when visiting remote beaches, plantations, waterfalls or hiking areas.
